The questions are designed so that, whatever you do, the tester can say you got it wrong. (And if you say you don't understand the questions, then of course that shows you're not literate.)

White people were usually exempt through a "grandfather clause" (if you, your father or grandfather had had the right to vote then you did not have to prove you were literate), or by having someone vouch for your good character in lieu of taking the test.
