I'm not fully committed to this idea, but I'm thinking we should challenge the notion of "living to fight another day." When I read some of the most horrific acts in human history, they were often times events that preceded small, gradual degradation of the actor's psychology over time.
When thinking about this I came across the psychological concept of "learned helplessness;" which reports that avoidance can gradually weaken a person's resilience over time. In learned helplessness, individuals who repeatedly experience situations where they feel powerless stop trying, even when they later have the ability to change things.
I propose that, like building a muscle, courage and persistence are cultivated through consistent action (or "fight," in reference to the original notion). When you "fight today," you build the psychological strength and resilience to face even greater challenges tomorrow. Even if the outcome is uncertain, fighting today ensures that you lived by your convictions and built on top of the courage you have now.
Let's just say, if you were my enemy, I would hope that you always "lived to fight another day." Yes, you would live. But you would live without a fight; which is no way to live at all.
