I keep hearing this rediculous argument that in the 1890s the US economy was at its peak under a regime of high tarrifs. Not only is this complete bullshit but the US was nowhere near the dominant empire in the 1890s but do you know who was? Great Britain who through the establshment of free trade throughout its commonwealth flourished.
Also the world was a much different and less connected place. This high tarrifs narrative is backwards economic voodoo.
