In 1856 an eighteen year old English chemistry student accidentally invented a purple dye — which came to be known as mauve — and thereafter purple clothes became incredibly fashionable for a few decades.

Further synthetic purples invented during the 19th century finally allowed painters to fully embrace it.

And it was the Impressionists, more than anybody else, who exploited the new possibilites of these many shades of purple — none more so than Claude Monet.
