UN says 30,000 children are suffering rights abuses in Syria

Nearly 30,000 children of militants and their supporters are suffering abuse in camps, prisons, and rehabilitation centers in Syria's northwest, according to the UN-backed Independent International Commission of Inquiry on Syria. Most of the children were brought to Syria and Iraq by their parents after the Islamic State group declared a caliphate in 2014. The commission called on all countries with children in Syria to repatriate them and integrate them into their societies. The largest number of children are staying at al-Hol Camp, while a smaller number are at Roj Camp, and teenage boys are kept in jails and rehabilitation centers run by the US-backed Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces. The commission concluded that living conditions in al-Hol and Roj camps amount to cruel and inhuman treatment and outrages on personal dignity. Some countries have repatriated their citizens, but a small percentage of foreign countries are doing so. Last month, the SDF detained 85 people during a security operation at al-Hol, capturing weapons and freeing a Yazidi woman who was raped and forced to marry IS fighters.
