I was biking through the Plateau on a side street and heard the chants of an anti-landlord demo. I stopped and tried to find the source of the sound. I was in a hurry somewhere so I didn't pursue it further. Running into a manif that you are into but had never previously heard about is a common experience in Montreal.
Later, I am biking back down through the Plateau I run into the demo, which is a physical squat party. An entire city block is evidently a large squat which is having a huge gathering/party. An eviction defense? A squat cracking party? There are crowds of black bloc with huge flag-banners marching around the block chanting in French. Inside it is a typical mix of francophone anarchist activist circus types partying throughout various rooms. I walk in with my bike and join the chants going on inside the building.
I end up in another small cafe room. Here there is a play or performance going on, and one of the performers is someone I know and after their dance/music performance they see me and come over to say hello. I ask about what is happening but it is too loud and chaotic. We step aside with their friends to talk on the sidewalk. I soon notice I have misplaced my bike, and one of to squatters help me start to look but the panic of realizing it's gone wakes me up.
