hmm but for that to trigger, someone would actually have to call that function (faux_device_destroy) with a null argument, right?

And the function's doc comment doesn't say it's ok to call it with a null...

but then if the null check was only defensive coding and not sth that's supposed to be reachable, shouldn't there be a BUG_ON / WARN_ON ?
