Many people outside the Greater Los Angeles area have no idea how big it is. Usually, my go-to remark is, “I sometimes spend two hours in traffic between points that are both in L.A.” (No, seriously. Try going from Boyle Heights to North Hollywood, for example. Fun times!)
Thanks to the fires, I have something else to point to. Using this tool, you can overlay the footprints of the Palisades, Eaton, and Hurst Fires over pretty much any place in the world.
Using this tool, I discovered that the Hurst Fire—the smallest of the three—could wipe out Harlem in NYC. As for the Palisades Fire—the largest of the three—it would level almost the entirety of London or Paris.
Oh, and keep in mind that even the combined size of all three fires is still smaller than Greater Los Angeles as a whole.
