Culturally, I feel like a lot of the problem is (shockingly) capitalism. If you start taking the analysis of incentive, affordance, and participation patterns seriously, you immediately see that the biggest problem with most collaborative systems is the company running them. Which of course you can't permit yourself to see, so the disciplines have remained weirdly warped and stunted. Hence too, maybe, techs fetish for quant over qual — less likely to get upsetting answers.
