In terms of AI, there are systems in the cloud and on the edge. Systems in the cloud are those that benefit from a remote processing center, like an ML engine that recommends songs based on your profile and profiles of others. Systems on the edge are those living on our devices, like an mobile app using ML to identify plants in the field. But what about Alexa? Well, systems like Alexa are called hybrid, because it has elements on the edge (inside the device) - such as the voice recognition system - but also have elements on the cloud - which are consumed after the local system is activated. An autonomous car is also hybrid, but most of the core process will be done on the edge (the vehicle it self) and only defer smaller processes to the cloud, like prediction of future traffic status.
