I took a cursory look at Sourcetrail. Tried using it on a real project but it's too outdated at this point to interpolate with my usual tooling. The project shut down in 2021 due to that very reason, it seems. Too difficult to keep it maintained with new versions of compilers and whatnot.
My impressions of it is that they were trying way too hard to be their own IDE. Most of their features seemed to be trying to remake tools that both Visual Studio and Jetbrains already have readily available. The thing unique to them is of course the graph, but frankly I didn't find the visualization terribly helpful. It didn't fundamentally show things that the source code hid.
If I had to guess, it seems like maybe the project started with a similar goal to what I had (helping the coder build a mental model) but then got lost in the weeds of just trying to keep up universal compatibility with a million toolchains.
diagnosis: scope creep
