Possible but I also think they wanted to be sure to confirm things so they didn't later find out they were incorrect and the passengers were still alive but ended up suffocating because they slacked off on searching the location in time.
No one can say they didn't try, and with the families of billionaires looking to sue, I think they wanted to cover all their bases.
