I haven't lived in Texas for a number of years, but I doubt things have changed so much as to change my assessment: this sounds mostly like ignorance.
I'm wondering what the reciprocal equivalent would be - a European country (*) with an unearned reputation (perhaps from fiction) over here for an bizarre/incompatible culture. It has to be well-known enough to have a reputation at all. Maybe Romania?
(*) Texas is, afterall, bigger than most European countries.
