I've long had this theory that reality is like a ream of paper - we exist on one of those sheets of paper, but there are are other timeline realities (sheets) all happening at the same time.
Some realities have the ability to travel between those sheets and sometimes you get a view of other sheets - this could explain ghosts who exist in their own plane.
