npub1cmgqvz7xr07euwkum3mjghjqcu4d3k2fcyf6g4uwwe5ggnd6fetq0wrzd2 (npub1cmg…rzd2) I read your post at night when I couldn't sleep. Excellent points, I agree with everything! I wanted to comment, but I was too afraid. Now, a few hours later, I realise that the anxiety came from point four.
I hate echo chambers, and even though Fediverse is not driven by algorithms, I have had a really hard time finding content that is not left-leaning. I share many values with left-leaning people, but the same goes for right-leaning people. For me, things are not black and white and I see the good in the core values of both sides. The world is complex and so are many problems and their solutions.
I liked how you said that leftist content is anti-anything. I find it often accusatory in nature and attacks people's conscience. "If you are not actively on our side, you are against us". You have to be politically active or you are a bad person. People seem to bask in the "excellence" of their own core values and there is nothing wrong with their own thinking - all the evil in the world comes from non-leftism. As I said, I do share many values with people on the left and think many of the issues are important, but the climate of debate can often feel toxic and frightening, especially for someone like me who is struggling with personal mental health issues and is quite scared of social media in general.
Perhaps your experience isn't as powerful as mine, but thanks to your post, I felt confident enough to share my own. This post may cause some people to block and unfollow me, so I'll probably regret it later 😬
Side note (nitpicking): the rules of mementomori.social say "No right-wing extremism or far-right politics", but say nothing about left-wing extremism or far-left politics (whatever those terms mean, I don't really know what is considered far-anything). I find this a bit strange. To me, it lays the foundation for the idea that only right-leaning ideas can be bad and left-leaning ideas are always good, no matter how extreme they are.
