Maybe a personal reaction, but terminology like “mechanistic understanding ,” “functional traits” and (worst of all) “service provision” rather drain the life out of the plants, and indeed of nature itself, that are ostensibly under discussion.
If we insist on making these wonderful living things justify their existence as useful green appliances, with minimal “adverse effects,” then I would say we don’t understand them, or their rightful place in our lives, at all.
