Which is better way to fill the converter, and why:

1. With the converter is still attached to the nib unit... dipping the nib into ink bottle and pulling ink through the nib.

2. Detaching the converter from nib unit, dipping the converter directly into ink bottle, pulling ink into it and reattaching it with the nib.

To me the first one seems wasteful and messy as ink in on the grip section and on nib which I have clean. Is there any strong reason to do the (1)?
