#Ukraine Rada (parliament) has recognised 19th #genocide of #Circassia
The Verkhovna Rada, Ukraine’s parliament, has recognised the Circassians’ right to self-determination and the 19th century genocide perpetrated against them by the Russian Empire, making Ukraine the second country to recognise the genocide after Georgia.

This topic is close personally, as I’ve visited today’s Kabardino-Balkaria in #Russia hundreds of times and know plenty of Kabardian aka Circassian aka Cherkess people (who call themselves “Adyghe”, to make things more complicated). In the republic’s capital Nalchik there’s a monument dedicated to the Genocide but local authorities have been gradually restricting the window for the locals to commemorate the event, as the whole remembrance of Circassian genocide is at a stark contrast with official narrative of Russians “bringing civilisation” and smaller nations “joining” Russia rather than being simply decimated and then annexed.
