Quite chuffed that I managed to finish this JUST as the power went down and took a photo in the pool of grey light coming through my studio window... I'm enjoying being on 'storm footing' - got all the candles ready, flasks filled with hot water, big pot of soup and our dinner cooked for later in case the power stays off. A bottle of wine and my beau drove 400 miles through the night to get home last night so we can cozy in and listen to the wind howling outside tonight.
The thrill I get from a storm reminds me of childhood powercuts, being snowed in for weeks, school closures, candles, pots of water boiling on the stove. It also renews my sense of AWE at nature, and our insignificance, and that feeling enlivens me. So I created this piece to evoke that sense of wonder and smallness.
I went to a brilliant Seed Talk a few months back on the neuroscience of creativity, and the culmination of the talk centred on cultivating a sense of awe in life - and how research shows this is the most effective conduit to happiness in life. And that the arts, and aesthetic experiences in general (and nature too of course), can generate a sense of awe, and this is why they are so important to us.
So, remember to cultivate awe in your lives folks, and gratitude for small joys like hot soup and the anticipation of a glass of wine by candlelight with your loved ones ✨️
