We didn't even have that stuff in ancient Rome, so it makes me wonder. Did people just culturally accept insane stories about barbarian hordes contributing to the collapse of Rome, while in real life they were just immigrant laborers being hired to stack stones or pick vegetables, and the pillaging was being done by Rome's own wealthy elites?
