Pinky Promises & High Fives!!
This afternoon I went skating with my niece’s class. Last time I made a pinky promise with a boy who wasn’t skating that he would bring his skates next time and I would try to teach him how to skate. Upon walking into the change room, I was greeted with a big smile on his face with skates in tow. We started out with him skating holding onto the boards (he’s taller than me even though he’s only 10 so holding onto me wouldn’t have worked) and he progressed to being able to skate with a skating aid with both feet although the aid was way too short for him. He didn’t want to stop. With each loop around the rink, he smiled bigger and grew to be more confident skating faster each time. He would call out to friends and pointed out how fast he could skate and ask if they wanted to race. Others congratulated him telling him he was doing a good job. Afterwards I gave him a big high five and told him how proud I am of him. He thanked me and told me he would see me next time.
My heart is full. All I wanted was for him to enjoy skating with his friends instead of sit on the benches like last time and feel good about himself.
Today I was able to pass the gift of being able to skate forward. If you’re able to volunteer, I highly encourage you to do it!! 💜
