The Coordinating Minister for Political, Legal, and Security Affairs was nearly Jokowi’s VP for this term before being rejected by coalition ally Golkar at the last moment during the 2019 campaign. Mahfud MD later joined Prabowo’s campaign, whom he will face as his opponent this time.
