I still love Tokyo, but it's not as genki as it used to be before the 2020 olympics and especially covid.
I'm glad to have lived there before these events. Things got more strict and Orwellian prior to the Olympics and ramped up significantly during covid.
The post-covid vibe is way different. I still plan to continue visiting as a have a lot of friends there, but nostalgia for pre-2020 Tokyo is sometimes heartbreaking. It was a special place and time.
Wearing masks with 99.999% compliance rate for two years and a tanking currency / economy can really kill the vibe. The general energy is more closed off, isolated, and depressed now.
Everything being discounted 30%+ vs. USD is nice, but that's also resulted in a flood of rando tourists. Before, most of the gaijin were expats that respected the cultural norms.
Also, the girls used to all swoon over Americans and now that fad has shifted to Korean girly boys with makeup (K-Pop). If you guys only knew how good the good 'ol days were.
