My neighbors had a garage sale over the weekend and then put a bunch of items that didn't sell out on the curb. My home office is on the front of my house and as I have sat here over the last couple of days, I've been amazed to watch how many people have come by and taken stuff. The pile is significantly smaller now than it was on Saturday evening.
I never really know how to feel about these situations. On one hand, my visceral, materialistic, privileged mind instantly has a knee-jerk sarcastic opinion like "what kind of person drives around and just takes used, random stuff from the curb?" On the other hand, an inner voice that is equally as loud thinks, "our materialism has gotten so out of hand and we have so much stuff which we don't need that we can just put it out as unwanted 'trash' and someone will come along and take it, sometimes even before the end of the same day."
What a dichotomy of excessive materialism and societal imbalance. So long, capitalism, and thanks for all the materialistic tendencies!
