I think it's so important to recognize that words are not that which they represent, you are spot on.
I find it useful, too, to differentiate between a sort of personal, romantic, or even ego motivated 'love' (which people often refer to, myself included), and the sort of universal love which you mentioned is very close to compassion. This type of love demands that we see ourselves in all others, not just our spouses or our families. This universal love is selfless. And in it's truest form demands the complete annihilation of ego.
