Released in 1998, Wild 9 marked Shiny’s return to consoles, but this time, it was developed for the newcomer Sony PlayStation instead of a Sega console. The game’s development commenced roughly after Earthworm Jim 2 and spanned three years. I stumbled upon an old Game Moratorium Article from the 90s, which revealed that at some point during development, approximately halfway through, the entire team left the project. A new team was then brought in to pick up the pieces and continue the work.

Wild 9 is a 3D sidescrolling action game, similar to most Shiny games, where the gameplay revolves around a unique mechanic. The primary weapon used by the protagonist, Rex, is called the rig, a wrist-worn device that enables him to attach enemies to it and hurl them around. The game’s action primarily revolves around using the rig to defeat enemies, perform platforming, and solve puzzles. While Wild 9 is not a bad game, it may have felt outdated by the time it was released in late 1998 compared to other games released around the same time. Interestingly, a version of the game was released in the Japanese market with all the art altered to resemble anime.
