🐝 Update from the Swiss Bee Mapping project
11 new wild honey bee colonies like this one in the photo were reported in July. This important project, which was launched in 2020, aims to find out whether wild honey bee colonies are viable in Switzerland.
With the support of over 120 volunteers and under scientific supervision, data is being collected on wild honey bee colonies. The aim is to make statements about the probability of survival of these colonies. Until now, both the public and the Swiss authorities have assumed that there are no wild honey bee populations - an assumption that has been refuted by numerous reports of findings.
The importance of the honeybee for our ecosystem and humanity is immeasurable. Clarification of the situation is therefore essential. Inaction towards this apparently endangered or even extinct wild animal species is unacceptable.
We are laying the foundations for the protection and promotion of wild bees by setting up a database. Help drive this important project forward!
