Build exactly as much software as you need, but build it in a way that can scale. Usually, that means to build the simplest thing possible. I’ve been coming across people saying that all systems of a particular sort must have something (e.g. data mining) that you simply don’t need if you have only 10 customers. If you only ever have 10 customers, time spent building software that supports 100,000 is a huge waste of time and money. Make sure that somebody wants what you’re giving before thinking about scaling.
