Brexit has happened, years ago. We live in a country that has left the EU. We might be able to rejoin eventually, one day, but certainly not in the foreseeable future - and certainly not without proving to all 27 national governments that we can be a committed and trustworthy candidate.
It was a bad decision handled disastrously, but it's the reality that we live in and can't undo. Trying to make the best of the situation is surely the only sensible approach for the immediate future.
The only alternative is for Starmer or Sunak to stand up and say 'we're going to make no effort to improve anything at all, either in our economic situation or our relations with the EU, we're going to put no effort into getting a good result from the upcoming negotiations, we're just going to give up and let it all rot'.
'Make Brexit work' means trying to minimise the harm, it means improving relations with the EU, it means negotiating in good faith and with the best intentions. It means being a good neighbour.
And whether you want the UK to ultimately rejoin, or to permanently stay outside, that is an essential job for the remainder of the decade.
