You’re lucky your city is keeping nazis at bay. Not so much here in Austria - well, historically speaking, Austria has been the main mass-production factory of nazis along with Germany lol.
There definitely are more of us, but I think the overt racism/xenophobia in western societies in addition to the desire to fit in pushes us to hide a big part of our identities - namely our origin.
As a Syrian refugee in Europe, the last thing you want is turning people’s attention towards your legal status or country of origin so the safest thing you can do is assimilate and thus not appear Arab/Syrian to the outside.
It makes me happy that you’ve found some more Arabs on Mastodon! I haven’t been here for thaaaat long (only since December of last year) so I’m kinda still a newbie and don’t know many people around here.
