My precious companion rat Shadow died this morning. She had to be euthanized following a respiratory crisis that started last night, and was the end result of a lifelong chronic infection. I feel confident that I did everything possible for her, but in the end, none of us will escape death. She was refusing food and water following her crisis, and I felt like any continued support would be futile and cruel.

Shadow was a very gentle, sweet, sensitive, and kind soul. She was a friend, confidant, and a source of immeasurable emotional support. Her companionship will be forever missed. I loved her.
