"The eldest, who was the first king, he named Atlas, and after him, the whole island and the surrounding ocean were called Atlantic. The twin born after him was given the name that the Hellenes render as Eumelus, but in the native tongue was called Gadeirus."
(Critias 114a–b)
In Critias, Plato describes Atlas as the first king of Atlantis and the eldest of the ten sons of Poseidon and Cleito. His twin brother was Eumelus (in Greek, Εὔμηλος), though he is also called Gadeirus (Greek: Γάδειρος), which is the name associated with Gades (modern Cádiz, Spain).
Gadeirus (Eumelus) was the brother of Atlas and ruled over the part of Atlantis near Gades.
