I might have a somewhat unpopular opinion, but: perhaps the slower nature of the network isn't so much of a problem. I think it's people's obsession of "I want it now, and I want it as fast as possible" is more the problem. Just queue up like 30GB of torrents on I2P before going to bed, and it's pretty much complete by the next day. Much better than having to pay for a VPN proxy service on clearnet, that probably still won't actually provide any protection (such as false 'no logging' claims, sidechannel weaknesses, etc).
