While I was teaching, I was a fairly strict authoritarian, but I also did a lot of weird stuff to engage the kids. One thing I learned after was the art of letting kids break the rules and keeping it a secret. There are so many kids that would have benefited from that.
Still, what I think worked the best for both the students and me was using a project based curriculum with clear goals. I taught 7th and 9th grades. Where I could see this working was when I had an 8th grader who had problems with numbers who came to me and for another project wanted to know how much force you would experience from a paintball hit, so we set up a rig to measure it. Seeing them engaged and invested was wonderful.
