The other reason I'm conflicted is because people I talk to usually have *expectations*. After a number of years of experience, they expect you to have gone into management, etc. That I've been programming for 30 years and don't want to stop probably means I'm an idiot, or insane, or both, to most people.
I've often thought about this myself and my stance is that programming is what keeps me interested in my job: it gives me energy, not take it away - and I wouldn't have it any other way.
