a while back (over 5 years ago) I wasn't able to use mesa with nvidia without all sorts of problems. was forced to install their proprietary drivers and even just getting those working was a miserable experience
meanwhile I've always just used the mesa stack with AMD
AFAIK all vendors have proprietary firmware blobs. other than that, what part of the mesa AMD driver stack isn't FOSS?
that being said intel seems to be the only game in town for an actual reliable it-just-works no matter the hardware model FOSS driver stack
