It's safer to use a terrible pen (a naked D1 refill with a tiny end cap) than a terrible knife.
BUT! the kids can neither read nor write cursive, which is making the pen an accessory for Olds and Victorinox doesn't need more association with Olds. Which is what I suspect is driving fewer knives with pens.
It's not like a slipjoint folder is a good knife; it's really really hard for a folder to be a good knife. We've just normalized bad knives.
