It's probably possible to do it anyway but then it would be unrealistic to get a text-to-speech app installed and set up in the OS to use TalkBack. You would need someone to help you do the install and set up TTS. We don't really trust the open source TTS apps to be robust enough to avoid breaking for users which is a problem too. Those apps also all require setup to work, unlike the Google one which is more automated.
