California Fire Scenes 'Like the End of the World'

The wildfires in California are exhausting natural and human resources, as recent satellite images show the devastating scale of the disaster. The images taken by satellites show the spread of the fires in wide areas, including forests near Los Angeles. Under the sky covered in rising smoke, the damage caused by the fires in the beginning of Malibu's famous coast is minimal, as the fire tends to spread between rows of luxurious villas, but the scene is completely different as you approach Pacific Palisades. In this neighborhood, which is being ravaged by a massive fire, the ruins are scattered everywhere, with streets filled with charred remains of homes. The main fire has consumed most of the scattered hotspots in the Los Angeles area, with approximately 7,700 hectares affected in Pacific Palisades and Malibu. According to an initial estimate, 'thousands' of buildings have been destroyed, said Fire Department spokesperson Christine Crowley during a press conference on Thursday. Authorities have yet to confirm or deny reports of finding human remains in two locations. Crowley emphasized that 'we can confirm that the Pacific Palisades fire is one of the most destructive natural disasters in the history of Los Angeles.' Access to this region has been largely restricted, even to residents who were evacuated since Tuesday. Journalists from Agence France-Presse were able to fly over the area by helicopter and witness the devastating damage. In some of these highly desirable neighborhoods in Malibu, especially those frequented by celebrities, only the skeletons of buildings that were once grand remain, indicating the extent of the damage. Some of these luxurious homes are estimated to be worth millions of dollars, but they have been completely destroyed. Pacific Palisades, overlooking Malibu and its beachside homes, appears deserted. Some homes survived the fire, while some streets are completely cleared of damage. However, as you approach the southern part of the neighborhood, it becomes clear that some of the magnificent homes have been reduced to tombs. Along the streets, only the chimneys or charred tree trunks remain from the once-grand family homes. During a press conference on Thursday, Los Angeles District Attorney Nathan Hochman said that his visit to his sister's home in Pacific Palisades was 'a scene like the end of the world.' Satellite images of California and Los Angeles wildfires confirmed that 'I have not seen a disaster of this magnitude in our city since the 1990s when Los Angeles was hit by fires, floods, earthquakes, and riots.' Captain Albert Azouz, who has been flying over the region for nearly a decade, has witnessed the devastation from the air and described it as 'madness. All those homes have disappeared.'
