I think the big difference again is that the traffic you build on Mastodon is your own traffic. It does not help to build traffic on these algorithm driven sites, as the algorithm will change and your followers will no longer find you. This has happened on most all of these sites, including both Facebook and Twitter. Better to build your own server.
