A new one for the life list—I saw this bird for the first time in late October on the same rock. The photos from that day were bad, and I couldn't identify the bird. Their size, short bill, and long legs threw me off.
Last week, the bird was there again. The light was perfect, and by chance another couple was watching the bird with their bird ID books in hand. We stopped and chatted for a bit, and with no successful ID, we went our separate ways. I planned to show Merlin a photo later.
A few minutes later, the light was gone, so we turned around. On our way back to the car, we passed the couple again. The bird had called while they were still watching, and they fired up Merlin for a sound ID.
This is a black-bellied plover, either a juvenile or an adult in nonbreeding plumage.
