No idea why people say running a mastodon network™ instance is cheap. It's expensive. Here's what I’m paying just for mastodon.layer02.net (80 users active, 97% resource utilization):
- 48U rack space lease: $700/mo
- Power: $300/mo
- Two IPv4 /24 blocks: $300/mo
- 10Gbps burstable internet: $300/mo
- 3 HP ProLiant DL380 Gen10 servers (~$20k each)
- 1 HP ProLiant DL160 Gen10 (~$1k)
- 2 Brocade ICX switches (~$200 each)
- Misc fiber cables, transceivers, DACs, etc.: $500
Can someone help me figure out how to lower my costs? I'm dying. The mastodon network™ is not sustainable.
