I try to avoid lingo such as “disruptive”, “cargo culting”, “yak shaving”, etc.:

– They have such rich meanings that it’s often not clear to readers which aspect I allude to in a particular case.

– Many don’t know what they mean (esp. newcomers & nonnative speakers). They can foster group identities but also exclude people.

– My arguments become stronger because I have to be explicit about what I want to say.
