At every age we think we are both "old" and "done," that this moment is the apex achievement and our final form. Then we grow older, and yesterday looks like the bloom of youth! And naïveté. "I'm older than I've ever been," as my grandmother used to say, and I think about Vuillard and his ilk, living til 1940, past cubism and futurism into abstract expressionism, while having once had such a perfect mastery of what became old-fashioned.
