Apple Intelligence To Bring Personal AI To Mac, IPhone And IPad

Apple announced at WWDC that it will bring generative and large language models (LLMs) to its main Apple products through Apple Intelligence. Apple Intelligence will run on local devices and also have an Apple Cloud element for more complex queries. It will be released in the Fall on iOS 18, iPad OS 18, and MacOS 'Sequoia'. Only Mac and iPad products with M-series processors and last year's iPhone 15 Pro with the A17Pro processor will support Apple Intelligence. Apple hopes to integrate it tightly into the Apple product interfaces and enhance Siri with better natural language processing and onscreen context awareness. Apple Intelligence will also be multimodal, including speech, written language, and images. It will have applications in enhancing existing services, rewriting and summarizing existing work, prioritizing messages and notifications, creating custom AI-generated emoji characters, and more. Apple will support third-party GenAI solutions such as ChatGPT in Siri, and third-party applications can utilize Apple Intelligence GenAI services on device. Apple has taken a conservative approach to AI by adding enhancements to existing functions and supporting older products. The company has also developed a specialized server called Private Cloud Compute (PCC) for larger models. The on-device foundation model of Apple Intelligence has about 8 billion parameters and uses Low-Rank Adaptation (LoRA) adapter for quantization. If the local model is insufficient, relevant data is sent to PCC for processing. The impact on battery life and performance compared to Microsoft's Copilot+ PCs will be seen in the fall release.
