tiling window managers are good actually if they're written and configured in a language that you know and like. you should in fact be using software that you have some basic grasp of how it works and how to meaningfully change the source code. it's not enough to merely be legally allowed to do this because it has a free license. if a piece of software is too big and complex, especially if it's written in a static language like C, for you as an end user to realistically be able to understand and modify it, then you're already domesticated no matter how "free" it is.
unfortunately, this is also something that is always going to happen with anything in the legacy of C and UNIX because they're both bad technologies. we could be living in a Smalltalk and Common Lisp world where it was in fact quite realistic for an end user who isn't a programmer to be able to explore and change the source of the software they're running without having to read reams of documentation. the eunuchs philosophy is and always will be the philosophy of petty DARPA bureaucrats.
