I don't think I've ever realized how beautiful November was. November has always been the Grey Month, the Cold Month, once all the leaves have fallen and seasonal depression crashes down on me and leaves me floundering and gasping. I can't say that the depression is gone, it has certainly been creeping in, but I've still been spending a lot of time outside.
And to my shock, the tracery of empty branches, the tans and browns of dead leaves and rushes, the scent of cold wet earth, the stormy river in shades from palest grey to clear green-grey to deep slate, the brown and grey birds with occasional shocking flashes of red on cardinal and woodpecker--are all incredibly beautiful. I don't know that I'll be able to hate this month ever again.
