Reflections on the rosary. Today is Friday, which focuses on the Sorrowful Mysteries. One of these is the Agony in the Garden, the night prior to Christ’s torture and crucifixion. I’m moved by this moment in the story because it shows Jesus’s humanity in that he’s full of anxiety and dread for what is to come. While we typically think of God as being all powerful and removed from pain, here we see Jesus experiencing the painful realities of the human condition firsthand. It’s a reminder that our God understands our own suffering, anxiety, and mental anguish in an intensely personal way. It’s a strange comfort to me to reflect on the idea that God himself has shared in this very difficult aspect of life. This inversion, God himself suffering, is a unique aspect of Christianity that I’m beginning to have a deeper appreciation for.
