A quick chat about real estate..
A: Hey Dude, good news, I finally paid off my mortgage, I finally own my own home !!
B: Awesome man, so you never have to pay anyone ever again !
A: well actaully, I do have property taxes.
B: ok, but at least it's a known cost.
A: not really, they're revised annually based on adjusted value assessments. They typically go up, because inflation goes up because money printing goes up.
B: Oh, well it's yours right, so at least you can do whatever you want with it.
A: umm ya. Actaully no, there are bylaws, ordinances, codes, and permits for pretty much anything I want to do. Not to mention a whole bunch of laws around selling it, gifting it, passing down to the next generation.
B: starting to sound like you don't really own this place.. but you do right ?
A: I do ya, I mean, I think I do.. my name is on a deed, recognized by the state. So as long as they're solvent and as long as they don't force me out under eminent domain, or confiscate it after declaring me an enemy of the state, or seize it claiming I owe a bunch in back taxes, then ya.. it's mine.
B: So, It's not your's then.
A: ya... no, I guess not.
