To answer your question directly: joining another server means that you will be creating a new account, if you haven't done so.
That said, interacting with users and their contents shouldn't require a new account at all; just use your current account to follow users on another instance, and if their content is available on your instance, you should also be able to interact with it.
Just be sure to either paste the user's or the user's content's URL in the search bar of *your* instance, and you should be able to interact with them.
